Archaeological monitoring took place of groundworks (consisting of an open-cut trench approximately 110m in length and a small access trench excavated midway along this) which were undertaken for the Pound Road Water Mains Scheme in November 2021.
The Pound Road WMS was located to the south of Ballygar village in Co. Galway. Main works involved installing a total of 2,492m of new/replacement water mains (including all necessary fittings, associated assets and transfer of service connections).
The monitoring follows a preliminary archaeological screening assessment carried out by AMS in April 2021. The assessment identified that the eastern section of the proposed scheme route impacted the adjoining Zones of Notification (ZoNs) surrounding a church (GA033-036001) and graveyard (GA033 036002). The graveyard also contains a monumental structure (GA033-036) listed on the Record of Monuments and Places and Record of Protected Structures. It was recommended that all ground disturbance works within these adjoining ZoNs and 20m on either side would be carried out under the direct and continuous supervision of an archaeologist in order to identify any subsurface archaeological remains that may have survived. This monitoring took place on 4, 15 and 16 November 2021.
No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the course of the archaeological monitoring.
