2022:077 - ATHENRY: Clarke Street/Cross Street, Galway

Archaeological monitoring of the removal of the concrete slab and tarmac surfaces, and the 200mm reduction and regrading of the underlying substrate at the site of a permitted discount retail store at Cross Street/Clarke Street, Athenry, County Galway was carried out between 28 February and 15 March 2022. The monitoring revealed that the substrate underlying the slab and tarmac surfaces predominantly comprised modern infill material. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered. Further phases of archaeological mitigation will be undertaken at the site prior to the commencement of construction works.
