As part of the approved Devenish Island jetty improvements, 4 wooden test piles were inserted and removed from the lakebed at the jetty. Archaeological monitoring was required to ensure no buried archaeological deposits were impacted through the piling and their subsequent removal.
The piles were driven directly into the lakebed and hammered until they met geological resistance. They were removed by means of a chain sling attached to a 22-tonne excavator which operated from a pontoon. The purpose of the test piling was to provide technical engineering data for the main construction phase.
There was no visible impact upon potential buried archaeological deposits within the footprint of the test piles. No archaeological material was identified adhering to the piles upon their removal.
