At the request of RKD Architects Ltd on behalf of Diageo, an archaeological impact assessment was undertaken for the proposed (Cipher 3) extension to a beer-processing plant to include a two-storey building and six processing tanks for Diageo at the St James's Gate brewery lands.
The site is centrally located within the St James’s Gate brewery lands bound by James Street to the south, Watling Street to the east and Victoria Quay to the north and adjacent to an internal circulation route (Cooke’s Lane). It is within the zone of archaeological potential of RMP DU018 020.
Testing showed made-up ground to the formation levels for the foundations and services. If it is required to breakout and remove the existing concrete located at a depth of 1.4m for the piling it should be archaeologically monitored.
