As part of an Archaeological Impact Assessment, test trenching was undertaken at a proposed development site on Palmer Road, Rush Demesne, Rush, Co. Dublin between 9 and 12 May 2022. Seven trenches were excavated across the site, which comprises two fields previously used for market gardening. A geophysical survey of the site had taken place in 2008 (Licence No. 08R0005) and this was followed up with archaeological testing of the area where a small number of anomalies were observed during the geophysical survey (Licence No. 08E0845). Nothing of archaeological significance was identified at that time.

Two features were noted during the programme of testing in the western field in May 2022. A possible curving ditch was identified towards the northern end of Trench 4. A single fragment of burnt bone and a fragment of struck flint were found within its fill. A masonry gate post was noted in Trench 5. It is nineteenth century or later in date and likely to be associated with the old Kenure Park estate.

No archaeological features were noted in either of the two trenches excavated in the eastern field (Trench 6 and Trench 7). Scatters of lithic material, including a flint blade, were noted across the site with the highest density in the topsoil in the eastern field.

Further recommendations for archaeological mitigation were made as a result of this phase of testing, which included a systematic field walking survey of the eastern field.
