Pre-development archaeological test trenching was carried out at the site of proposed Frylite facility at Ballcoolin, Co. Dublin in response to planning conditions imposed as part of grant of planning approval. A total of 9 test trenches were excavated at 15m intervals across the site excluding a wayleave buffer associated with a gas mains pipeline. Test trenching revealed that the vast majority of the site does not contain any archaeological material within those areas which underwent test trenching, however one area of archaeological activity was identified within the south-west portion of the site, this being the site of a potential prehistoric occupation cooking area also known as a fulacht fiadh or burnt mound.
Further mitigation in the form of hand excavation and recording is recommended as part of development led works.
