Archaeological monitoring took place during the site clearance and construction of the Dodder Greenway Phase 3 within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic watercourse (RMP DU022-003). Phase 3 extended from the Firhouse weir in the west to the junction of the Knocklyon and Firhouse Road to the east. Intermittent monitoring took place over an 11-month period throughout 2021 and 2022.
The main bulk of works consisted of upgrading existing paths, stone boundary walls and access ways to form the linear greenway; car parking facilitates were extended at the spur road off the Spawell Roundabout as well as upgrading public realm features and providing a viewing area of the historic weir (RMP DU022-014) (SDCC RPS 186). The refurbishment of the penstocks was also recorded. No archaeological features, finds or material were revealed during archaeological monitoring and metal detection of spoil along the banks of the River Dodder.
