Test excavation was carried out on 6 July 2022. The ground consisted of land built up with industrial and demolition waste. This is likely to be waste material associated with the former mid-20th-century foundry located to the north of the site. This interpretation is aided by the fact that the land on which the site is located was not reclaimed until the eighteenth century and illustrated in cartographic sources as being undeveloped up until the 20th century. It was also established that there are deep natural silty riverine and marine silts and sands across the site which corresponds to its former estuarine position.
The greatest archaeological potential across the site is at the deepest levels, as features associated with the very earliest occupation of the Liffey Estuary might survive as shown by the discovery of the prehistoric fish traps on the northern side of the river buried deep in the estuarine soils. Should such features survive, they may be impacted by the excavation of the basement, for the lift pits, drainage manholes and a surface water attenuation tank. Archaeological monitoring at the site is ongoing.
