Archaeological testing was carried out in advance of a proposed development of an industrial unit at Damastown, Dublin 15. The site is located within a disturbed greenfield surrounded by greenfield sites and the Tolka River valley.
In total five test trenches were excavated, totalling 422 linear metres. One feature of archaeological interest was identified in trench T2. The feature comprised a shallow elongated oval burnt pit which measured 2.2m x 0.65m wide x 0.13m deep and could represent a kiln or fire pit. No dateable finds were recovered from a small section excavated across the southern end of the pit and additional trenches opened in the vicinity did not uncover any further archaeological features. The pit appears to be an isolated feature, which would be quite typical if the feature is a kiln, a monument type which often occur in isolation.
It was recommended that the pit feature identified in trench T2 be fully archaeologically excavated under licence to the National Monuments Service in advance of development.
