An archaeological excavation was carried out at the site following test excavations (2019:521; 19E0161) by James Hession. Test excavations identified (among other features) a large curving ditch interpreted as corresponding to the central enclosing ditch around the early church site. Full excavation of the site revealed that the ditch was the earliest surviving feature on site. It had a maximum length of 26.5m (north-south), although it extended beyond the northern limit of excavation. Three phases of activity were observed in the ditch stratigraphy. Additional features recorded during the excavation included various ditches mainly concentrated to the west of the site and some pits. A 10th-century bone comb was retrieved from the fill of a pit at the north-east corner of the site. Post-excavation analysis is ongoing.
