Archaeological monitoring of site investigation works was carried out in order to determine the depth and location of an existing Irish Watermain at Castle Street Link, Brenanstown & Carrickmines Great, within the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone, Dublin 18.
Monitoring of the slit trenches took place within the zone of notification for mill and enclosure site (DU026-080001-2). This report follows archaeological test trenching carried out by Liza Kavanagh of IAC Archaeology in 2018 in the immediate vicinity of the Irish Water watermains. 11 trenches investigated the zone of notification for DU026-080001-2 which revealed that this area had been heavily disturbed by modern land drains and services (Kavanagh 2018; Licence 18E0650; See section 2.2).
Archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance was undertaken on 16 June 2022. The site currently comprises two fields of level pasture, used by the Carrickmines Equestrian Centre.
Monitoring efforts focused on the excavation of two trenches in order to confirm the location of Victorian waterpipes previously laid in the area. The pipes were easily located within the projected two trenches leading to a limited amount of excavation. The observed stratigraphy confirmed previous disturbance associated with the original installation of the pipes, and no archaeological finds or features were observed during these works.
