A programme of archaeological test-trenching and monitoring was carried out on lands in Old Bawn, Tallaght, Co. Dublin in August 2022. The work was conducted as part of a South Dublin County Council affordable housing scheme called Brady’s Court.

Ten archaeological trenches were opened across the site. A former millrace was identified running north-east/south-west across the site. This is marked on the First Edition OS map from c. 1840. It was filled with modern rubble and contained no earlier material, and no evidence for a pre-nineteenth-century date for its construction or fills was obtained.

To the north side of the site, the foundations for a modern building were uncovered along with drains and dumps of rubble material. The ground on the south side of the site also showed signs of having been built up using rubble waste material.

A monitoring programme for site setup works identified a continuation of the millrace to the west of the site. This was also tested and, as with the eastern portion, no pre-nineteenth-century evidence was identified for the construction or fill of the millrace. A modern shrine, the Tree of Hope, was also relocated under archaeological supervision following discussions with the local community.
