Archaeological testing was undertaken at Malahide Road, in the townland of Newtown, Dublin 17. It follows an archaeological desktop assessment carried out by Jacqui Anderson of IAC Archaeology in November 2019.
Testing was carried out on 25 February 2022. Six trenches were excavated across the site measuring 165 linear metres in total. The test trenches targeted the open, undeveloped, spaces in the southern half of the site to fully investigate its archaeological potential. Testing revealed no areas of archaeological significance.
The previous desktop assessment concluded that the development area had been subject to a large amount of disturbance. It was considered highly likely that if any archaeological deposits existed within the site, they had been previously removed. The results of the test trenching confirmed that the ground had been significantly disturbed by previous development across the site and no archaeological deposits or features were identified during testing.
