Archaeological monitoring of the excavation of seven trial holes within the interior of the site in order to investigate the geological makeup of the site, as well as along the perimeter wall of the site to ascertain the depth of the wall foundations, was undertaken on 3 November 2021 at the former Gowan Motors Compound on Merrion Road, Dublin 4.
The trial holes reached a maximum depth of 3m, and consisted of a fairly uniform stratigraphy consisting of a silty clay overlying a modern rubble layer, gravel layer, and boulder clay layer.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of monitoring at 169-177 Merrion Road, Dublin. The lack of findings, taken into account with the recorded stratigraphy, which presents evidence of artificial build-up and modern rubble layers, suggests that this site has been extensively disturbed in the past.
