Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at a site at the junction of Belmayne Avenue and Main Street in Clongriffin, Dublin 13. Monitoring of the groundworks for the development was undertaken in response to a condition of planning. A significant portion of the c. 2 ha site contains a temporary school and the groundworks had been monitored (unlicenced) during its construction in 2020, with no finds, features or material of archaeological significance identified at that time.
Monitoring of the remaining portion of the subject site took place from 8 September – 6 October 2022. Topsoil stripping was undertaken by a variety of mechanical excavators using toothed and grading buckets. The site had been extensively disturbed from previous activities. No features, finds or material of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring. A section of wall running alongside the townland boundary was exposed during construction works. It was subject to a building survey prior to demolition as it thought it may date to the 18th or 19th century and was likely constructed as part of the Balgriffin House estate.
