A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken at a proposed development site at Shanganagh Townland, Shankill, Co. Dublin, at the northern edge of the village of Shankill, 140m east of the Shanganagh Road, approximately 100m south of Loughlinstown River and 180m west of the railway line.

The current programme of archaeological test trenching at the site took place from 25 April 2022 in sunny weather conditions. A total of five test trenches were excavated across the development lands in an area measuring approximately 0.41 hectares. The exposed subsoil was examined for archaeological features and topsoil was examined by hand for artefacts. Excavation ceased at the first significant archaeological level or at natural subsoil.

The results from the test trenching investigation established that there are surviving subsurface remains associated with the Abingdon Lodge. These were identified as agricultural or garden features and date to the 18th and 19th centuries.
