An archaeological assessment was undertaken at a site at Old Road, Hayestown, Rush, Co. Dublin. The assessment comprises a desktop study, geophysical survey (22R0186) and test excavations (22E0470).
Test excavation took place on 28-29 June 2022 in a mixture of rainy and dry conditions. Amendments were made to the agreed Method Statement trench layout due to the presence of an underground gas pipeline.
Eleven test trenches, totalling 656 linear metres, were excavated across the site. Trenches 5, 6 and 8 were placed to assess geophysical anomalies. None of the anomalies identified in the geophysical survey left any visible trace in the excavated trenches.
Topsoil, a dark friable sandy clay, was generally 0.4m in depth and a plough-zone, where present, was up to 0.2m in depth. These overlay the subsoil, generally a light brown, yellow or grey clay though a yellowish-brown sandy subsoil was present in the southern field around the derelict house.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of the test excavations.
