Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the site at Folkstown Little, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. This was informed by geophysical survey 22R0119.
A total of 22 test trenches were excavated within the site. Each trench measured 1.8m in width, and in total 2,527m of linear trenches were excavated down to the natural subsoil. Topsoil and sod, with a combined depth of 0.35m to 0.45m, was taken down onto a natural that varied significantly across the site. A number of linear features (C1–C7) were confirmed as corresponding with historic field boundaries depicted on Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping since 1836, and also identified as geophysical anomalies. In an area that was unsuitable for
geophysical survey, in the eastern extent of the site, another field boundary (C8), as depicted on the 25-inch OS map of 1906, was also exposed. These field boundaries were largely removed sometime prior to a 1995 aerial photograph, with one boundary (C4) in the north-east area of the site removed in more recent times. The remaining geophysical anomalies were deemed geological in nature, represented iron or changes in the topsoil that did not extend to natural.
No archaeological features or deposits were exposed or identified.
