The archaeological monitoring of exploratory groundworks was undertaken for Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Programme, Lunniagh Beg, Meenamillar scheme, located along a local road (L5363) in the townland of Lunniagh (An Luinniagh) in Co. Donegal
There were no archaeological sites and/or monuments intersected by the scheme or located in the vicinity of the scheme. The monitoring was carried out intermittently between 23 November and 6 December 2022 as a precaution due to the potential for archaeological remains to be present in the western half of the proposed scheme totalling approximately 265m. The scheme’s route intersected a clachan (a former settlement) in An Luinniagh townland and was located in close proximity to the site of three wells and the site of three lime kilns depicted on the first-edition six-inch Ordnance Survey map (1836), and the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map (1905).
No archaeological objects, features or deposits were noted during the archaeological monitoring of a continuous open-cut trench situated along the existing road.
