Stage (i)a Standard Test Excavations and Stage (i)h Metal Detection Surveys were undertaken in the townland of Cloghfin as part of the Archaeological Consultancy Services Contract for the Lifford to Castlefin Greenway Project, N15, Co. Donegal. The development will consist of the construction of a greenway along the N15 roadway between Lifford and Castlefin on the northern side of the southbound carriage. It extends for c.7.5km consisting of a 3m-wide Bitumen surfaced Greenway/Cycleway, separated from the N15 by a 2m separation strip to the inside of the greenway. The proposed greenway extends through the site of the ‘Battlefield of Clady’ (RMP DG079:048) where fighting took place between the Williamite and Jacobite forces in April 1689 as part of the so-called ‘Battle of the Fords’. Two areas were assigned for Stage (i)a Standard Test Excavations.
• Testing Area 1 (55 sq. m; Battlefield site DG079-048); ITM 628988, 894140
• Testing Area 2: (100 sq. m); ITM 628877, 894077
Additionally, an area of 3200 sq. m extending across and beyond TA1 was selected for Stage (i)h Metal Detection Survey Services.
The total Stage (i)a length of testing at Cloghfin was 47m, representing a 54.58% sample of the greenfield area available for test excavations. No sites, features or objects of archaeological significance were found. The Stage (i)h Metal Detection surveys uncovered no archaeologically significant artefacts.
