The development works entail the construction of a single dwelling house, parking facilities and associated services at Cloghroe, Drumkeen, Co. Donegal. RMP DG069-018---- Megalithic Tomb – Portal Tomb, is approximately 30m south-west of the proposed development area which is within the Zone of Archaeological Notification for this monument.
The subject site is sub-rectangular in plan and was covered in low grass having recently been grazed by sheep. The site is bounded to the south by a single-track road and the site is elevated above the road level. The site has a gentle north to south slope and is located on an elevated location with expansive views to the south to the Cloghroe River valley. A small plantation of pine trees is located to the north of the site, a dwelling house is located to the east and visible across the road in an adjacent field to the south is DG069-018. Access to the site is via a field gate adjacent to the road to the southwest of the proposed development site.
Test trenching took place on 25 April 2022. Test trenching comprised 7 linear trenches excavated across the entire development area. No finds or features of archaeological significance were noted during the test trenching. The proposed development will have no physical or visual impact on the archaeological monument DG069-018---- Megalithic Tomb – Portal Tomb located in the vicinity.
