Excavation at Ballinimlagh 1, as part of the Cork to Ringaskiddy Project, Co.
Cork, revealed six undated pits, a post-medieval gully and a tree hole in Area A. Two further undated pits were identified in Areas B and C respectively. Stage (iv) post-excavation analysis is still pending. Below is a preliminary bulletin. While the pits are currently undated, they are likely related to the post-medieval to early modern
activity in the area.
A double-ditched field boundary with an associated bank and partial stone revetment was recorded in Area D, visible on the 1st edition OS mapping. An additional gully was
found to truncate this field boundary. The double-ditched field boundary likely continued beyond the current roadtake in either direction.
A total of thirty-four artefacts/potential artefacts including post-medieval pottery, glass, clay tobacco pipe fragments, ceramic and metal objects were recovered during the excavation and through metal detection. Archaeological material in the form of charred plant remains (nutshell and charcoal) were also recovered. Preliminary interpretation is that this was a post-medieval agricultural landscape.
