An archaeological impact assessment, including testing was undertaken as part of a further information request by Cork County Council for a proposed development near two recorded monuments (CO054-105 and CO054-106001-2) in the townland of Templebodan, Co. Cork.
The proposed development is a plot of land (approx. 0.4 ha) close to the zone of archaeological potential around CO054-105, the site of a possible church (known as a ‘prayer house’ or ‘mass-house’ locally), recorded only on the third edition (1936) OS six-inch map. There is no surface indication of the site.
Eight test-trenches in total were excavated within the development area. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were uncovered in any of the trenches. Two linear features (F1-2) aligned north-east/south-west were uncovered in trenches at the eastern end of the field. Both are interpreted as stone-built box drains drains of 19th-/early 20th-century date. Land drains of this nature are generally classed as being of limited archaeological significance.
