Archaeological testing of the site of a proposed residential development at the existing Kinsale GAA grounds, Rathbeg and Abbey-lands (part of), Kinsale, County Cork was undertaken in response to an RFI from Cork County Council.
Two linear test trenches, measuring 1.5m in width and with a combined length of 75m, were excavated across the only suitable areas within the GAA grounds that fall within the ZON for military camp (CO112-098—-). No artefacts, features or deposits of archaeological significance were revealed within the excavated test trenches.
The testing programme demonstrated that the eastern and south-eastern portions of the site have been subject to significant ground truncation as a result of past site levelling activities and retain negligible archaeological potential.
However, away from these areas, it appears that a lesser extent of ground truncation has been undertaken, as demonstrated by the presence of a number of shallow, agricultural-type features within Trench 1. As such, it can be considered that the remainder of the subject site, away from the eastern and south-eastern margins, retains a degree of archaeological potential.
Licensed archaeological monitoring has been recommended should the proposed development proceed to construction.
