Sample excavation was undertaken in July 2022 at a coastal promontory fort in Cloddagh townland, Sherkin Island, Co. Cork. The aim was to record archaeological deposits at a site threatened by coastal erosion, part of a larger study of coastal promontory forts in the county. Radiocarbon samples were recovered from occupation deposits in the interior, the results of which are pending. The only artifact find of significance is a spindle whorl of likely medieval date. The excavation also uncovered a post-hole and stone deposit connected to a possible built structure at the site.
