A programme of archaeological test trenching was undertaken at Tullig, Connagh, Leap, Cork between 12 and 14 October 2022. These works were undertaken as part of a request for further information (RFI) in relation to a planning application for an industrial development.
At the time of test-trenching the site consisted of a series of agricultural fields partially on the margins of cut-over bog to the south of the Leap/Glandore–Clonakilty/Rosscarbery Road.
The programme of archaeological testing comprised the excavation of 29 trenches with a total length of 1,348 linear metres; the trenching pattern was approved by Mary Sleeman (Cork County Council Archaeologist) on 6 September 2022. These trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development and targeted geophysical anomalies in order to assess the potential for subsurface archaeological remains.
The majority of the geophysical anomalies were geological in origin, apart from field boundaries as identified on the OSI historic mapping, and stone-lined drains. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
