Archaeological testing was carried out at Mohera, Castlelyons in January 2022, in advance of a proposed extension to the existing GAA training/playing facilities. The adjacent village of Castlelyons originated as a medieval settlement. Its castle ruin survives a short distance to the southwest and extensive remains of its Carmelite priory survive a short distance to the northeast. A geophysics survey carried out in advance of the testing detected numerous anomalies, many of which were regarded as being ‘possibly’ archaeological in origin.
The test trenching revealed a number of cultivation furrows and two linear ditches interpreted as field boundaries, probably dating to the 18th/19th centuries.
