Archaeological testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed new food production facility within the Kerry Group complex in Rathgoggan Middle, Charleville, County Cork. The subject area was located in the northern portion of the complex and was in use as a storage, maintenance and carparking area at the time of testing.
Four test trenches, totalling 85m in length, were excavated across available areas of the site which may be impacted by the proposed development. Testing of the available areas revealed the site to be heavily disturbed with significant amounts of modern infill material having been deposited across its surface during the formation of the existing yard and carparking area. Site preparation works associated with the formation of the yard area also appear to have led to a marginal truncation of the upper subsoil level.
While a number of features including wall foundations and culverts, that appear to be associated with the 19th-century corn mill (CO002-061005-), were uncovered within Trench 4, no evidence of any archaeological features predating the 19th century was revealed within the excavated trenches.
