Archaeological testing of the site of a proposed private dwelling development at Church Lane, Townplots, Kinsale, County Cork was undertaken on 15 and 16 February 2022 as part of an archaeological assessment of the site. Three test trenches, totalling 16m in length, were excavated across available open areas within the site which will be impacted by the proposed development. No evidence of any medieval archaeological activity was revealed within the excavated trenches.
A number of wall foundations and old surfaces were revealed within Trenches 1 and 3. The available evidence suggests that these features date to no earlier than the late 18th century, with those revealed within Trench 1 corresponding with a structure depicted at that location on the early edition OS maps. The revealed features are not considered to be of archaeological significance but are worthy of further recording should the proposed development proceed.
