Archaeological monitoring was recommended as a condition of planning for the Castletownbere Sewerage Scheme. A full archaeological presence was maintained during the removal of topsoil at the water treatment plant site to the west of the town and no archaeological finds or strata were identified during the duration of the pre-construction works. An archaeological presence was also maintained during trenching within the street network over a period of three months. The only feature of archaeological/cultural heritage significance was the exposure of a long stretch of wall at the east side of the town adjacent to the site of Castle Dermot (CO115-021). The wall extended east-west along the south side of the trench and was preserved in situ. A quay wall once existed at this location prior to the reclamation of ground and the widening of the original road during the early part of the twentieth century. No other features of significance was exposed during the course of archaeological monitoring.
