Test trenching was carried out on a 1.8ha proposed housing development site located south of a local road south-west of Quin village centre. A stream flows along the western boundary of the site and a sewage treatment works and fields lie to the south. Eighteen trenches were excavated but no archaeological features or deposits were encountered.
Two stone walls were visible within the site, neither of which appeared to be of any great antiquity, although no dating evidence was recovered. A low, grass-covered, stone wall composed of limestone rubble, was noted in the centre of the site and was oriented broadly from east to west. The wall was not strictly linear but ‘meandered’ somewhat and was approximately 57m long, 1m wide and 0.3m high. A shorter (approximately 22m long) wall was recorded to the south. This wall was more irregular and at most 0.8m wide and 0.2m high.
Archaeological monitoring of construction in the vicinity of these walls was recommended.
