Targeted archaeological test excavations were undertaken as a component of an EIAR report being submitted with regard to a planning application to construct Ballycar Wind Farm in Co. Clare. Thirteen test trenches (T1-T13) were opened on the footprint of proposed Turbine 2 and also further focused on the footprint of a nearby section of the proposed internal access/grid connection to the turbine. The testing was undertaken due to the proximity of a prehistoric ritual complex comprising of: cairn CL052-064001; standing stone CL052-064002 and ring barrow CL052-064003. The test trenches were set out using a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) to <50mm accuracy and opened with an 8-tonne back-acting track machine utilising a 1.6m wide grading bucket.

Excavated topsoil, with an average depth of between 0.2-0.3m was similar in each trench and varied from mid to dark greyish brown organic material. Subsoil exposed beneath the topsoil comprised of light grey to dark orange silty sandy clay with frequent small stone inclusions and natural bedrock exposed in some areas.

The results of the test excavations were entirely negative. No archaeological features or artefacts were found.
