Archaeological monitoring of groundworks was undertaken for Bridge Street and Wolfe Tone Street Water Mains Schemes located in Cavan town, Co. Cavan. The monitoring was carried out between 8 February and 1 March 2022 at Bridge Street and between 31 March and 26 April 2022 at Wolfe Tone Street. The works were located within the Zone of Notification for the historic town of Cavan (CV020-055----) and on a bridge (CV020-055008-) at Bridge Street.
Bridge Street
Three trial holes ranged between 2.1–3.2m in length, 0.6m in width and 0.8–1m in depth, and four exploratory trenches ranged between 3.1–5m in length, 0.9–1.8m in width and 0.5–1.2m in depth were archaeologically monitored.
In all trenches, underlying the modern street surface were multiple services and disturbed ground. At the bottom of two trenches in the south-eastern end of the scheme the natural subsoil consisted of mid-yellowish brown sandy clay overlaying bedrock were revealed. No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were noted in these trenches.
Wolfe Tone Street
Three trial holes ranged between 3–3.5m in length, 0.6m in width and 0.7–1.2m in depth, and nine exploratory trenches ranged between 1.4–5m in length, 0.6–1m in width and 0.6–1.2m in depth were archaeologically monitored.
In all trenches, underlying the modern street surface were either natural subsoil consisting of mid-yellowish brown stony clay or multiple services and disturbed ground. No potential archaeological objects, features or deposits were noted in these trenches
