Archaeological monitoring was carried out for groundworks (exploratory groundworks, direct drilling and opencut trenching) within the Zone of Notification for the Historic town of Shercock (CV023-035003) and in its immediate vicinity along the southernmost 300m of the proposed scheme route for the Carrickmacross Road Water Mains Scheme (WMS) in Shercock, Co. Cavan. The scheme was located along the R178 (Engle Wood Drive/Carrickmacross Road) and a local country road to the north of Shercock’s Main Street and comprises the installation of 757m of new water mains.
The stratigraphic sequence in all the Trial Holes and Trenches comprised up to 0.4m of tarmac and modern road surfaces, overlaying natural boulder clay and multiple services. The boulder clay comprised a mix of light–mid-yellowish/grey sandy clay containing small to large stones.
No potential archaeological finds, features, or deposits were noted during the course of the archaeological monitoring.
