Archaeological testing was undertaken at a proposed solar farm development at Graiguealug, Clonmacshane and Ballintrane townlands, County Carlow. Testing followed a geophysical survey (Licence 22R0291) undertaken within areas of heightened archaeological potential within Fields S1, S2, N2 and N3 of the proposed development. Several responses of a potential archaeological character were recorded during this survey.
Extensive prehistoric archaeological activity was noted during testing across the northernmost field (N3) where a double ditched ring ditch was noted during geophysical survey. Possible pits, cremation pits, kilns, a roundhouse, post-holes and other potential archaeological feature were also noted during testing within this field.
At the south-west corner of Field N2 a large ditch feature was investigated. This may relate to milling activity noted in the vicinity on historic mapping. Several pit and post-like features were noted during testing within this portion of the field.
A discrete area of potential archaeological activity was noted within Field S1. A large curvilinear cropmark was investigated within this field and was found to be non-archaeological.
Two discrete areas of archaeological activity were noted within Field S3 where a small number of possible pit or post-like features were noted.
