Archaeological monitoring in the form of pre-development overburden removal was carried out in relation to proposed development. A previous desktop study identified the site as being located within an archaeological landscape with particular reference to Doagh Flax Spinning Mill within the site boundaries. This site is recorded on the Department's Industrial Heritage Record (IHR 10356:000:00) and is protected by PPS 6 Policy BH2. Ground investigations detected the presence of asbestos in the form of Chrysolite and Amosite fibres, therefore ground reduction works at the southern section of the site were limited to 400mm, grading to 0mm, and on the northern side, existing ground surfaces were to be retained.
Overburden removal was monitored on a strip measuring approx. 50m x 8m x 0.5m to the west side of the development and an excavation 12m long x 5m wide x 1.8m deep was monitored for a storm attenuation tank to the south. These confirmed the presence of infill material across the site and the subsoil level was not impacted. The remainder of the site was to be built up with stone to encapsulate any asbestos deposits existing within the fill material.
No archaeological or industrial heritage features were identified
