The development of land to the rear of No 13 Castle Street, Lisburn, consisted of the construction of a of a 2-storey mews dwelling and associated amenity space linking into existing services and utilizing existing access.
The grant of planning permission conditioned a phase of licensed archaeological monitoring of the ground works associated with construction.
The site was located in proximity to a Listed Building, however Historic Environment Division - Historic Buildings (HED:HB) were content the proposal would have no adverse impact on the setting of the Listed Building given the separation distance involved.
Historic Environment Division - Historic Monuments considered the impacts of the proposal and was content, subject to conditions for the agreement and implementation of archaeological mitigation. Although this proposal included a relatively small area of ground disturbance, they were concerned that archaeological remains might be uncovered during site works.
They recommended a phase of archaeological monitoring as a condition to any approval granted to the application.
Archaeological monitoring of ground works took place over two weekends, 29th January and 5th February 2022. While the investigations uncovered evidence for a two-phased building, it was considered probable that this did not pre-date the 19th century. In addition, no evidence was uncovered for any archaeology pre-dating the buildings.
