Test excavation was undertaken in fulfilment of a planning condition. 18 trenches were excavated to assess the site in general and investigate the townland boundary. The townland boundary between Kindelstown Upper and Delgany was recorded in one trench with four additional profiles recorded at the upstanding boundary. It comprised a bank which varied in height and appeared to have been scarped from the eastern side. The height of the bank varied from 0.26-0.73m. It was generally 2.5m wide and comprised a loose orange/brown loamy clay. A slight depression was noted on the north-west side of the bank in Trench 18, although this coincides with the location of a building marked on the 3rd Edition OS map and may indicate clearance of this structure. The location of the bank incorporated the existing stream at the south-west end.
Two buildings were noted on early edition OSI mapping. The first was noted west of the site entrance laneway but this area has previously been scarped down to the stream. The second structure was situated to the immediate north-west of the townland boundary in Trench 18. The fill of the north-west end of this trench contained numerous loose stones, however, no trace of floors or wall footings were noted during the excavation of this trench. It seems this building was therefore previously cleared and no trace of the structure remains.
The remains of a more recent house or structure were located at the north-east end of the site in Trenches 16 and 17. Two portions of concrete slab and a section of wall lay under the topsoil here.
