The client, the Board of Management of St. Senans Primary School, is conducting extension and alterations to the school, to include 12 temporary classrooms, realignment and extension of boundary walls and railings, new set down with access, and staff car park.
The site footprint encompasses c. 8300m² (c. 110m north-south x 105m). The work entails surface preparation of a greenfield area forming some 60 to 65% of the site area and in its northern aspect and surface preparation of tarmac area on the remaining southern aspect.
Archaeological monitoring of initial phase took place between 2 and 8 November 2021. The works entailed mechanical topsoil stripping for a site compound at the north side of the site and topsoil stripping in advance of excavation for connection of water and electricity services. The compound area was 44m by 11m, while the pipe corridors were all 2.2m in width and a total of 142m in length. In all instances the yellow sandy silty natural subsoil with some decayed stone surface was achieved and no archaeology was encountered. The work is scheduled to continue in early 2022.
