The clients, Ruairi and Ruth Donegan, undertook construction of a new fully-serviced dwelling, garage, effluent treatment system, percolation area and all associated site works at Barntown, Carrick, Co. Wexford. Condition Nos 1 to 3 of Request for Further Information 20210845 specified requirement for Archaeological Test Excavation and Impact Assessment. Test excavation took place on 19 September 2021.
Six trenches were mechanically excavated to cover all locations of construction-led site impacts. The trenches varied in depth between 0.2m and 0.4m, dependent on the depth of the underlying natural subsoil surface. The deeper topsoil was located to western aspect of the site. The topsoil consisted of pale brown sandy silty clay. The subsoil consisted of compact friable grey white marl with yellow striations. Its contained frequent inclusions of medium to large decayed and undecayed stone. All trenches were 1.4m in width. No archaeology was encountered.
