Pre-development archaeological test trenching was completed at Main Street, Ferns, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Eircode Y21 E8D5.
One test trench 10m in length was excavated as part of a pre-planning assessment to the west of an existing office unit. This strategy was adopted in order to confirm if there is any archaeology likely to survive within the footprint of the development.
The ground was completely disturbed from construction activities associated with the existing development. Natural ground, a mid orange-brown silty clay was exposed at a depth of 0.3m at the south-western end of the trench adjacent the road only. Elsewhere it was exposed at 0.9m below the ground level and it was clear that construction activities from earlier developments had reduced the ground level significantly and layers of rubble comprising concrete cavity blocks were contained within the central part of the trench which had a depth of 0.9m.
