Archaeological monitoring in advance of forestry planting was undertaken at Bolgerstown, Co. Wexford on 1 March 2021. The monitoring was undertaken c. 175m south of enclosure and church site WX037-082(001-002) in three fields, nominally named north, southwest and southeast. All these field were gently undulating rough pasture fields, with lower-lying wet conditions and reeds observed in places. Monitoring was of a forestry planting technique called ‘scrap-mounding’, whereby the sod is turned over in a space c. 0.3m square (typically 0.2-0.25m deep, and not penetrating the topsoil) to loosen the soil in advance of tree planting. Approximately 7000 scrap mounds were excavated and monitored.
No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were uncovered during monitoring. As no features of archaeological potential were encountered during monitoring, and no artefacts were uncovered from the topsoil, no further archaeological works are recommended for the site.
