As part of seeking planning permission to undertake demolition works, build extensions, carry out renovations and associated site works at a disused Licensed Premises, at Tallowbridge, Tallow, it was required to undertake a programme of archaeological testing.
The development site is located within the area of archaeological potential around WA028-014 - Bridge. This eleven-arch stone bridge extending over the river Bride was built c. 1700 and appears to be the one denoted on a map by Bateman in 1716. The contemporaneous description of the achievements of the First Earl of Cork, referred to him having built two bridges over the river Tallow, one of which was at Tallow. The northern end of the bridge extends to the southern edge of the development site.
Testing was confined to where the new extension will abut the northern side of the main existing building (Brideview Licensed Premises). The proposed single-storey extension to the south of the main building was at the time of testing occupied by an extension, a stone culvert under the building and a wooden decking area, all of which will be removed should planning permission be granted. It was not possible to position test trenches at this location.
No archaeological remains were found in the two test trenches opened on the proposed extension to the north of the main building. As it was not possible to do testing to the south of the main building, and the area nearest to the bridge, it was recommended that ground works for the single-storey extension to the south of the main building be archaeologically monitored.
