Archaeological monitoring was undertaken at the rear of 35 O’Connell Street, Dungarvan, to fulfil a planning condition for a single storey extension to the building. The planning reference number is 20/163. The site is located approximately 400m west of the historic walled town of Dungarvan. The street was named Blackpool on the 1st edition 1841 Ordnance Survey map. There is a mixture of commercial and residential premises on the street.
The building is a two storey terraced premises with three bays on the ground floor and two on the first floor with a small walled yard to the rear. The boundary wall on the north and west side of the yard is constructed of random rubble limestone while the wall on the east side is constructed of concrete block.
A foundation trench for the new extension was excavated parallel to the boundary walls of the yard to an approximate width of 0.4-0.6m and depth of 0.5m. The upper layer of topsoil in the yard was removed. There were modern inclusions of brick, plastic, glass and concrete. A layer of cobbles were recorded in the north-west corner of the yard beneath the topsoil. The underlying soil was a grey brown sandy clay.
No archaeological features, artefacts or stratigraphy were recorded while monitoring ground disturbance works at the site.
