As part of granted planning permission to build a dwelling house it was required that a programme of archaeological testing be undertaken. The requirement for the archaeological works was due to the fact the site is located close to an archaeological monument recorded in the South Tipperary RMP. The monument (TS049-038), classified as a ringfort, is located c. 50m to the west of the development site.
A total of three test trenches were opened on the imprint of the proposed works: two on the house site and one on the wastewater treatment system. The two test trenches on the house site were featureless. In the south-east end of the third trench, an isolated feature was revealed extending beneath the baulk. Sub-circular in plan, it was infilled with a disturbed topsoil and a high content of small pieces of sandstone, as well as an occasional medium-sized piece of sandstone. None of the stones showed evidence of burning, although the occasional piece had degraded. This feature was found in isolation and appeared to be of relative modern provenance. Its function remained undetermined.
