Planning permission was obtained for the conversion of an existing dwelling house into two houses and the construction to the rear of an extension to both dwellings at The Lower Valley, Fethard, Co. Tipperary. As part of granted planning permission it was required that the ground works be archaeologically monitored due to the site being within the zone of archaeological potential for the historic town of Fethard (TS070-040).

Ground works were undertaken at the rear of an existing dwelling house to accommodate the building of a new extension, with a concrete surface removed in advance of opening the four strip foundation trenches. There were limited sub-surface works inside the existing dwelling house. A section of the floor and the underlying supporting material were removed in advance of opening the strip foundation trench for the new party wall between the two new dwelling houses.

No archaeological features and/or remains were uncovered in the course of archaeological monitoring. The excavations were dominated by stony sandy gravels. The prevalence of such deposits was no surprise, as gravel quarries were in use within the previous 40/50 years on the adjoining lands to the south of the Lower Valley Road.
