The client, Siobhan Majella Delaney, is constructing a two-storey dwelling with a packaged waste water treatment system, raised bed polishing filter and all associated site works as Rahinch, Co. Tipperary. Condition No. 3 of Further Information Required, Ref. 21/588 identifies requirement for Archaeological Test Excavation and Archaeological Impact Assessment. The greenfield area is orientated north to south, with westward projection from its northern aspect (approximately of 70m by 45m and with 30m westward projection of 40m width). The nearest extant monument is an enclosure (TN048-012), situated 100m to the west. Test excavation took place on 25 September 2021.
Three test trenches were excavated, all with mechanical excavator employing a flat-edged bucketed. The trenches varied in depth between 0.1m and 0.4m in depth, dependent on the depth of the underlying natural subsoil surface. The topsoil consisted of pale sandy clay. The subsoil consisted of compact red brown clay with frequent inclusions of small decayed and undecayed stone. All trenches were 1.6m in width. No archaeology was encountered.
