The client, Cashel – Tipperary Municipal Area, undertook rejuvenation of Market Yard (off Mitchell Street), Tipperary (Town Lot townland). Archaeological monitoring took place between 24 June 2021 and 3 September 2021.
The entirety of the project area was confined to east side of the Market Yard, inclusive of the public access to Main Street. It is in effect a north-south corridor extending from Main Street to Mitchell Street, 104m in length and 32m in maximum width. The deeper works entailed: excavation for pots to retain lighting and canopy structure etc. 1900 x 1900mm and 1800mm in depth; excavation for ESB service trenches at 900mm depth and 400mm width; excavation for other services (drainage etc.) at 400 to 500mm depth and 400mm width; reinstatement of same with ducts set in lemix and reinstated with gravel and appropriate surface finish relative to location on site. The shallower surface works required limited excavation of tarmac parking or thoroughfare locations to depths of 200mm and resurface over with same material. All paving areas and pedestrian islands within the car park were mechanically removed/excavated to depth of c. 200mm and rebuilt with new paving materials.
No archaeology was found during the works.
