The client, Cashel – Tipperary Municipal Area, undertook the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the River Ara at Abbey Street, Tipperary (Collegeland townland), as part of An Bord Pleanála ABP-306704-20. An archaeological monitoring licence was applied for in which the accompanying method statement gave the proviso of commencing unlicensed monitoring while awaiting issue of licence. It further stated that should archaeology be encountered while awaiting the licence all site works would immediately cease pending issue of the licence. In the event the work was completed and for some inexplicable reason, without any licence number being issued.
Monitoring took place between 27 July and 4 August 2021. No archaeological material, deposits, features or artefacts were revealed during this work. It was found that the low limestone wall on the north bank of the river was mainly composed of ashlar stone, most likely the building material of the 18th-century school formerly on the CBS Secondary School grounds, which was demolished c. 1820. This stone also comprised some dressed paving elements.
No archaeology was encountered.
