The client, Tipperary County Council, undertook the installation of a new section of water mains duct on the Dublin Road, Cashel, Co. Tipperary in CharterschoolLand townland. These works constituted emergency replacement works as fuel seepage was occurring into the existing mains. Monitoring of this work which took place from 19-22 April 2021.
The project entailed excavation to access a 60m section of the duct and replace the same (4 inch Class D DI Pipe). Additional works were 2 Sluice Valves at Start and Finish location; 1 Hydrant at Garage (replace existing); 3 Existing Services to reconnect. In all the site measured 60m in length with additional 5-6m set 20m south of main section.
The works took place on the western hard shoulder of the Dublin Road, at the northern periphery of Cashel. The main road lies to east, and a Texaco garage lies immediately to west, with a low wall and vehicular entrance separating the two.
An east to west stone-lined culvert was revealed at ITM 607680 641066 and at 0.5m beneath the road surface. It consists of two flat limestone capstones of 0.13m thickness protruding from the south and north trench walls. The southern one takes up almost all of the trench width and the northern is partially exposed in its trench wall. The southern one is 0.58m wide (north-south). The capstones are set on round and angular limestone ‘dry stone’ wall on north and south. These stones measure between 0.1m by 0.06m and 0.18m by 0.14m and were set against the trench wall in order to elevate and retain the capstones. The base of the trench was left as a clay surface. No mortar or other bonding agent was used. The ensemble achieves an overall height of 0.17m. The purpose of the stone culvert was most probably to divert spring water from Palmershill to east, beneath the Dublin Road. In all probability this was undertaken as a famine relief scheme and is consistent with other stone culverts of this period encountered within Cashel. This was recorded and left in situ as the duct was inserted beneath the culvert.
